The name, JOGYO translates from sanskrit as “Pure thoughts or stillness among action.” The band, JOGYO is about flow, surrendering to the constant change and harnessing it to create a sonic bombast that is hard to compare to any other. Reggae and hardcore elements mingle with tribal and folkloric influences to create an entirely new sound. Marrying components of tribal music with electronic beats results in music that somehow recalls the best work of Public Enemy producers “The Bomb Squad” while simultaneously calling back to the artists’ roots in the African Diaspora and the New York art world. JOGYO is Dru Barnes and Devi Mambouka.

Raised just outside Trenchtown, Dru Barnes spent much of his youth in the woods with his grandparents learning the old traditions of his home country. After coming to America armed with the lessons learned in the woods, he began to apply them to music and art projects in New York.

Growing up as the daughter of the Ambassador of Gabon and a Singaporean mother, Devi Mambouka obtained a unique perspective on Africa as a source of our essential being and as a metaphor for the merging of the disparate cultures of the world from which they had sprung forth.

Joined by their early exposure to extreme views of the world, Barnes and Mambouka chose to not abandon the old world lessons they learned in their youth and instead decided to fuse the old and modern world through the music of JOGYO.

On “Rudeboy,” JOGYO’s debut single, Barnes, in an attempt to push things forward, exclaims, “I don’t wanna be a rudeboy no more no more.” Produced by The Last Nights, AKA Jordan Parker, “Rudeboy” is a distorted electro dancehall onslaught.

The b-side is “Thundacat,” a bass-heavy yet quirky dance floor banger also produced by Parker. Barnes and Mambouka wax about the future of music and individuality.

The boys of 33Hz are back from the beach, and this time, they are ready for sin.

At least that’s the story behind 33Hz’s new single, “Nightspot”, a tale of bacchanalian longing set in the midst of a short visit to a friend outside of New York. But sometimes lounging just ain’t enough, and it’s time to find that after-hours club on the shady east-side of town packed with people far too strange to come out in the daylight.

Produced by Ming (of Ming & FS), “Nightspot” is a straight up electro-disco number that places 33hZ squarely back on the dance floor at Odyssey 2001…or more like Odyssey 2011. Mixing classic NYC “classy” disco with a touch of French house and a pinch of R&B, “Nightspot” is a perfect soundtrack to a pre-party, or the evening’s eventual peak, or the woozy 4am after-party.

The 12” release features a stripped down disco dub remix from disco dancefloor darlings Beg To Differ (Nick Chacona & Roy Dank of Wurst Music). The b-side is an Electro-fied rework of the 33Hz song “Stephanie All Night” by Ulysses (Throne Of Blood, Wurst).

Publicist, the solo drum and electronic project from Trans Am and Weird War drummer Sebastian Thomson, fuses live drums and vocoded vocals with spacey dance rhythms and funk synth bass lines, all performed by Thomson. The artist sees himself as “of the people and for the people,” preferring to perform on dance floors rather than on a stage. Since 2009 Publicist has brought his dynamic live show to the stages of Europe and America appearing with acts such as ESG, Joakim, Lindstom and Tussle. Publicist’s previous releases include the 2009 12” with Ian Svenonius, Momma/Stone Age and the Keep it Off the Record EP from 2010, among others.

The artist’s first release from Dither Down Records, the Hardwork EP, includes the two original tracks “Hardwork” and “I Wont”, and features remixes of both songs from both established and up and coming remixers. The EP’s title song showcases Publicists’ trademark ferocious synths and beats interlaced with his vocoded vocals, resulting in a track that dares listeners to not get down and sweaty. For the “Hardwork” remix, Publicist has teamed with the up and coming pair of Walker & Royce. Made up of Sam Walker (AKA Hotline) and Gavin Royce, who currently head up the A&R department at Nurvous Records, the duo has been garnering attention for both the artists they have been signing, along with their own productions and recently mixed their labels’ compilation album “Introducing: Nurvous Records Vol. 1.”

The digital release of the “Hardwork” EP includes an additional remix of the title song by Brooklyn’s Nick Chacona. Chacona began his producing career in 1999, and in 2003 released “Band Practice,” the b-side to his mysterious promo-only Pool Party project. His debut full-length release “Love In The Middle”, which was released in 2010 on Moodmusic, garnered attention and praise in the electronic music press around the world. In addition to his solo work, Chacona has recently been in demand as one half of “Beg to Differ,” his production project with Wurst Music Company Head Roy Dank.

On “I Wont”, Publicist’s second original track on the EP, the artist shows that his music is not just about rousing drum beats and funky bass lines as he ironically sings throughout the chorus, “I wont sing about you anymore.” With his remix of “I Wont,” Galactic Classics brings in a bouncy and dubby sound and fuses it with Publicists’ funky disco bests and vocoded vocals. Galactic Classics is Valerian Marguery, a France based up and coming Cosmic Disco producer and graphic designer. His debut album will the first full length album released by Dither Down Records and is scheduled to be released on cassette and digital this winter.

Dither Down is a new label headed up by Tim Wagner of 33Hz and DJ Chicus of the reggae label, Redbud Records. Blending their love of Indie Pop with Disco, Dub, 80s electro and House, Dither Down releases songs by up and coming New York artists and pairs them with the best new remixers from around the world.
